28 May 2015 Golf gets an express delivery! Roll up! Roll up! Golf Express, the campaign to encourage busy people to play all the game in half the time, is underway.Golf Express promotes 9-hole golf and also encourages players to enjoy after-work roll-ups. It’s running across Staffordshire as part of an England Golf project to increase participation and club membership and was officially launched at Uttoxeter Golf Club.Over 40 people joined the club’s weekly roll-up – and then followed-up with a sociable get together and prize-giving in the clubhouse.Uttoxeter member Paul Shaw commented: “Many golf clubs have run this type of 9-hole event over the years, but it is brilliant that now England Golf and Staffordshire Golf have put a national brand behind it.”Uttoxeter is one of 20 clubs across Staffordshire which are backing Golf Express by offering 9-hole green fees and a loyalty card to encourage golfers to play more often: if they play five rounds, they get the sixth free.Twelve of the clubs are also offering golfers the opportunity to play in weekly, after-work roll-ups, such as that at Uttoxeter. These are open to non-members, a handicap is not essential and players will be paired up with other golfers for the fun competitions.Gareth Shaw, the Staffordshire County Development Officer, commented: “This is what golf is all about, having time to play the sport we all love and also having time to socialise with friends following the round.”Iain Lancaster, Regional Manager for England Golf, added: “The time it takes to play the game is a barrier to the sport. We are hoping that by marketing the message that you can play shorter rounds to suit your available leisure time, we will attract new players and lapsed golfers – and encourage current golfers to play more often.”Golf Express is part of an England Golf project which is trialling innovative ways of increasing golf club membership and participation in the sport. It recognises that most people’s leisure time is reducing and for many it can be as little as two hours a day.The clubs involved in Golf Express are: Bloxwich, Branston, Calderfields, Darnford Moor, Dartmouth, Druids Heath, Izaak Walton, Lakeside, Lichfield, Mark Butler Golf Academy, Newcastle, Onneley, Oxley Park, Stafford Castle, Stone, The Chase, Trentham Park, 3 Hammers, Uttoxeter and Cannock Park.To find out more visit getintogolf.org/golfexpress or call 0800 118 2766 Join the Twitter conversation: #golfexpress
JOCKEY QUOTESSANTIAGO GONZALEZ, PRIZE EXHIBIT, WINNER: “She’s a superior horse. She runs in better races than these other horses regularly and she showed her class today.“She has a lot of speed. I can wait and wait with her and I know she can still get there with her speed.” KENT DESORMEAUX, VELVET MESQUITE, SECOND: “She’s not fond of soft ground. I think she ran her eyeballs out but she got beat a nose in a situation she doesn’t care to be in. Not to mention, she’s been off a while so I don’t think it would have mattered as much if she was racing with one under her belt.“Her future is very bright. She’s coming back from a laceration on her hind end as well and that always causes concern. You can wonder if she’ll be the same. Well, she’s the same.” JULIEN LEPAROUX, AGELESS, THIRD: “No real excuses. The course is the same for everybody. She had a little layoff, but she ran her race. It looks like she came back good and hopefully, she’ll be good for the rest of the year.”TRAINER QUOTES JAMES CASSIDY, PRIZE EXHIBIT, WINNER: “I didn’t think she’d have any problem (coming down the hill for the first time) unless she started idling trying to figure out what the heck this is all about, which she has a tendency to do.“But being that he (Santiago Gonzalez) had her surrounded, she didn’t have any time to think about that, so that was a good thing. I was a little upset we were that close, but when it opened for her, he rode her perfect, and she’s a hard horse to ride. You could see down the lane she was out there in the clear and kind of looking around, so she can be difficult, but she got it done.“Gonzalez is really a good rider. If he keeps finding his skills, he’ll be one of the best riders here, if he isn’t close to that already.” ARNAUD DELACOUR, AGELESS, THIRD: “I thought everything went pretty good. She had a good trip and she was finishing, so we’re pretty happy with the race she ran.” NOTES: The winning owner is Deron Pearson of Valencia who campaigns as DP Racing. Cassidy indicated the Grade II Buena Vista Stakes at one mile on turf Feb. 20 would be next.
Bathers are being warned to avoid the water at three Donegal beaches this week due to pollution.Notices have been issued for Bundoran Beach, Port Arthur in Derrybeg and Port na Blagh Beach. The public is warned to ‘Do Not Swim’ at Bundoran and Port Arthur and a Prior Warning is in place for Port na Blagh. The warnings were issued for 72 hours from Monday 22nd July. The issue at Bundoran relates to a visible report of pollution due to suspected Storm Water overflow from localised heavy rainfall. The authorities have been contacted and re-sampling methods are in place.People are told not to swim at Port Arthur Beach, Gweedore, due to elevated levels of E.coli arising from a stormwater influx. At Port na Blagh, bathers are advised of the possibility of an increase in the levels of bacteria in the bathing water over the coming days due to forecasted rainfall.Higher levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness. Soccerex 2008 will take place at the Sandon Convention Centre located in the heart of the Gauteng province’s economic hub.(Image: Sandton Central) Tamara O’ReillyThe imminent hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa has opened many doors for South Africa, one of them being Soccerex, the biggest football-focused exhibition in the world. The three-day event will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, from 24 November – the second consecutive year of the Gauteng Department of Sports Recreation Arts and Culture’s three-year host deal. The inaugural South African leg of the exhibition held around the same time last year drew as many, if not more, visitors than expected. With over 4 000 delegates and 300 exhibitors from over 95 countries participating in this year’s Soccerex, it’s expected to be no different.“The magnitude of this year’s three-day Soccerex conference has astonished organisers who have recorded mountains of applications from international and local exhibitors who will fill the Sandton Convention Centre to capacity to display their wares,” says Barbara Creecy, MEC for Sports, Recreation Arts and Culture. “This year’s event will be the biggest and best yet with the entire convention centre booked out.”The Sandton Convention Centre is based in Johannesburg’s business hub. Several major events have been hosted at the centre as its convenient location offers access to over 5 000 surrounding hotel rooms as well as top shopping locations.Soccerex, launched at Old Trafford in 1997, has evolved into a four-day event that attracts an assortment of football industry players, from fans to football-related businesses. Prior to being hosted by South Africa, Dubai was the home of Soccerex for six years, and in 2006 business deals worth over $1.8-billion were signed among attendees.Provincial economic boostAs small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) play a major role in the development of the Gauteng economy, the subsidised exhibition space and networking platform for such businesses has been doubled from last years 15.“Besides offering numerous opportunities for local companies to partner and do business with their international counterparts, we estimate that the hosting of Soccerex over three years would indirectly inject more than R5-billion ($586-million) into the Gauteng economy and would contribute massively to job creations,” says Creecy.“While the economic impact assessment to quantify the return on investment for the province from Soccerex 2007 is still in progress, we can report that Soccerex 2007 exceeded our expectations with increased direct spending by visitors estimated to have boosted the provincial economy by at least R150-million ($10-million)”.HighlightsThis year, Soccerex announced the launch of its SMS competition which will allow the two winners to participate in the Soccerex All Star Charity Football match which takes place as a precursor to the main exhibition. The match will feature soccer legends – the likes of former Fifa Player of the Year, Liberian George Weah, Liverpool and England legend John Barnes and Leeds and South Africa’s own soccer hero Lucas Radebe.Proceeds arising from the competition will go toward Unicef South Africa and Diambars, a Senegalese-based non-profit organisation that combines football with educational and physical development aimed at school children. Also on the cards is the second instalment of the five-a-side tournament which sees more the 100 community-based clubs from across the province in action. This tournament develops young talent amongst players and encourages interest in the sport among youth.Social responsibilityAdding to Soccerex’s focus on social responsibility and community upliftment, partners of the exhibition have announced the establishment of a multi purpose sports facility in Soweto, which is scheduled for completion for next year Soccerex.Do you have any comments or queries about this article? Xiaomi launched the Redmi 3S (3S Prime) successor, the Redmi 4, in India on Tuesday at a starting price of Rs 6,999 for the 2GB RAM and 16GB memory version going all the way to Rs 10,999 for the top end 4GB RAM and 64GB memory version. The Redmi 4 will also be available in 3GB RAM and 32GB memory version for Rs 8,999.Much like the Redmi 3S, the Redmi 4 also brings in some hard-to-get hardware specs at some rock-bottom prices. And just like the Redmi 3S, the Redmi 4 will also be made in India, according to Xiaomi. The Redmi 4, much like its predecessor, also comes with an all-metal body and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The phone, in fact, looks a lot like the Redmi Note 4, with smaller bezels. It comes with curved 2.5D glass on the front and will also come in matte black finish and gold colour options like the Redmi Note 4.It comes with a 5-inch 720p display and an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor under the hood. The Redmi 4 is smoother and more thermal efficient than Lenovo’s Moto G5, according to Xiaomi. The Redmi 4 sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with PDAF and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. On the software side, the Redmi 4 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based MIUI. The phone will be eligible for Android Nougat preview out-of-the-box. Furthermore, the phone is backed by a 4,100mAh battery. The phone supports 4G LTE and is also VoLTE-ready.Some big shoes to fill, some new areas to conquerThe Redmi 4 will have some big shoes to fill because the Redmi 3S has been very successful for the company in question. Xiaomi VP and India MD Manu Kumar Jain, only recently, announced that the company has sold over 40 lakh units of the Redmi 3S phone in the country in 9 months. The Redmi 3S, which was launched in India in August last year, has in fact become the highest selling phone ever available in India via the online sales model, he added.advertisementAlso Read: Nokia 3310 launched in India at Rs 3310, available from May 18The Redmi 4 comes at a time when Xiaomi is slowly and steadily ramping up its sales strategy in the country. In a bid to give its offline ambitions a boost, Xiaomi opened its first Mi Home store in India recently. Xiaomi’s first Mi Home store in India, which is located in Bengaluru, will be open for the public from May 20 and will be a one stop shop for anything and everything that the Chinese company sells in India. The company, in addition, is also looking to open Mi Home stores in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai in the days to come. In fact, it plans to open as many as 100 Mi Homes in the country in the next two years. The move to open a Mi Home in India is part of Xiaomi’s strategy and growing shift towards bringing its products to offline sales channels. Xiaomi phones, although value for money, are notorious for being out of stock almost all the time. An online-only sales approach also meant it was impossible for people to personally try out these phones before making a purchase. A Mi Home store will solve both the purposes. It is expected that the Mi Home would be among the first few stores in India where buyers would be able to experience the newly launched Redmi 4 in person.
