Dodgers’ Brett Anderson gets back into the routine

first_imgFor Anderson, there were more important things Monday than beating the Giants.“I’m worried about being healthy and getting through my two innings,” he said. “It could be the Giants, the ‘27 Yankees or a Little League team from Williamsport for all I care.”No replayAndre Ethier and Yasiel Puig both impressed Monday with throws to home plate from left and right field, respectively. Ethier’s throw in the third inning caught Brandon Hicks trying to tag up and score on a fairly deep fly ball. Puig’s throw in the fifth inning might have been in time to retire Matt Duffy scoring from second base. Duffy was ruled safe by home plate umpire Ted Barrett, but we’ll never know for sure. Instant replay is not available for managers to challenge calls during spring training, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.AlsoThe Angels and Dodgers have reached contract agreements with all of their players with zero to three years’ service time. … The Angels’ starting pitchers the next three days: Left-hander Hector Santiago opposes the Rangers’ Yovani Gallardo today in Tempe; right-hander Jered Weaver opposes the Diamondbacks’ Robbie Ray on Wednesday in Scottsdale; left-hander C.J. Wilson opposes Jason Hammel on Thursday in Tempe. … Tim Federowicz won’t play against his old team on Opening Day. The Padres catcher, who was acquired from the Dodgers in the deal that sent Matt Kemp to San Diego, was diagnosed with a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee that will likely require arthroscopic surgery. … Clayton Kershaw makes his second spring start for the Dodgers when they host the Colorado Rockies today at Camelback Ranch. Eddie Butler will start for Colorado. Zack Greinke starts for the Dodgers on Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs in Mesa. He was fine in the game, too. Anderson threw two scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants, inducing five ground-ball outs and striking out one. Only one ball left the infield, a harmless line-drive single by Matt Duffy.Like his curveball, Anderson’s sense of humor was in midseason form. Pedaling a stationary bicycle in a tunnel leading to the visitors’ clubhouse at Scottsdale Stadium, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, he joked, “I’ll have to replenish myself with a cheeseburger.”The early results were impressive but not necessarily unexpected. Anderson is regarded as one of the best ground-ball pitchers in the majors when he’s healthy. The Dodgers signed him to an incentive-laden one-year contract in December with visions of keeping him in the starting rotation for a full season. To keep up his end of the deal, Anderson is integrating a 10-15 minute program into his morning routine designed to strengthen his back — a recurring source of ailments during his six-year career. He ultimately had surgery on a bulging disk last August, ending his first and only season with the Colorado Rockies. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. >> Brett Anderson had himself quite a morning Monday. He was scheduled to pitch a competitive game in the afternoon, something he hadn’t done since August 5 of last year.As the pitcher wrote on his Twitter account, “‘Oh you’re starting today … have fun expelling everything in your system beforehand.’ — my body somehow knowing I pitch today.”That’s a real thing, apparently. Anderson said it happened to Dodgers pitcher Brandon McCarthy a day earlier.“It definitely made my morning rougher than anticipated,” Anderson said. “Once I started throwing, getting loose, it was fine.”last_img
