Arsene Wenger has warned his Arsenal team how they perform over the Barclays Premier League run-in will decide his summer transfer plans. “We have had some blips that were not expected, Blackburn and Bradford (in the cup competitions), but overall I must say the attitude of the team has been great and when everyone is here (fit), then we have a strong team. “What is important is to analyse where we can improve at the end of the season.” Despite his warnings that each man is effectively playing for his place – with even captain Thomas Vermaelen and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny no longer guaranteed a start – Wenger feels the current squad do deserve a great deal of credit for the way they have hauled themselves back into contention with a run of five wins in the last seven league games. “They have gone through difficult times and have responded well,” he said, “They have shown mental strength as we lost against Blackburn (at home in the FA Cup), Bayern (in the Champions League at home) and then Tottenham, so as well they could be scared that the group implodes. “We have shown a strong response against Bayern (in the Champions League away) and also Swansea, so that shows that this group is mentally strong.” Wenger is set to have a bumper warchest with which to improve the squad when the transfer window re-opens – and the Arsenal boss wants his players to show him there is no need to bring in reinforcements for their position by finishing what has been a testing campaign in style. “We have to analyse. What will decide our attitude, my attitude, is how we do now until the end of the season,” said Wenger. Press Association
8 June 2012A medium-term target of 80% internet connectivity across Africa by 2020 has been set, Communications Minister Dina Pule told delegates at the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Indaba in Cape Town on Thursday.“In this connected future, all of Africa’s major cities, towns and villages will be connected to affordable internet, thereby facilitating the continent’s mass entry into the knowledge and information economy,” Pule said in her closing speech.Inter-ministerial meetings held during the indaba yielded a resolution to engage with the rest of Africa on the ICT journey. The support of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in their plans to update regulations would also be provided, Pule said. “[It] should help developing countries to benefit from the frameworks for interconnections and roaming in the telecommunications market.”A team was being set up to monitor the progress and implementation of resolutions made at the indaba, and feedback would be shared with other African countries. Regional and continental organisations would interact with countries which were not represented at the indaba.Pule said that delivering broadband access to every African citizen would accelerate the attainment of the UN Millennium Development Goals.“Our work will also assist us in identifying and closing the skills gap within our countries.”The benefit of such an approach would be Africa creating its own technologies instead of just being a consumer for them, she said.It was the government’s role, within the information and communications sector, to act as a regulator.”We never abdicate that responsibility to anyone,” said Pule.Working with the private sector and entrepreneurs – especially the youth – could provide further opportunities, though.Sustainable jobs, some of which might not exist today, could also be created if large and small to medium businesses were allowed the space to innovate.“This will help us close the gap between policymakers and the entrepreneurs who are crucial in the creation of jobs,” she said.Expansion of the mobile application industry served as an example of a job creation area which did not exist three years ago, Pule said. “Now it employs millions of people and is making the lives of many easier.”Sapa
Not long ago, Intuit was a traditional software vendor, selling boxed desktop programs like TurboTax, Quicken and QuickBooks. With that business fading, however, and company has been retooling itself for the era of mobile computing, cloud-based services and big data. It’s a neessary transition for old-school software makers hoping to remain relevant in an increasingly networked world.Intuit Didn’t Bring It’s “A” GameAt the company’s Investor Day on Tuesday, president and CEO Brad Smith acknowledged that fiscal 2012 “was not our best year” and that the company “didn’t bring our A game.” But Smith said Intuit had identified what was going well, and “where we have to double down” in 2013 and beyond.Smith told press and financial analysts gathered at the company’s Mountain View headquarters that Intuit had made progress toward managing the 8,000-person company like a start up (divided into “teams no bigger than two pizzas can feed”). The aim is to “de-risk decisions” by running “very lightweight experiments to prove that there’s a there there before we plunk down millions of dollars” to develop new features and products.Where Intuit Needs To Double DownBut the company still needs to work on extending its mobile momentum, increasing the power of its platform to gain “network effects” from users and partners extending the company’s reach. Not surprisingly, those are some of the same issues facing software publishers from Adobe to Microsoft as they face startup competitors that leverage advanced mobile and social capabilities like GPS and cameras from the get-go. “The mobile experience has won,” Smith declared.Unlike many of those startups, though, Intuit charges for its products. So the goal is not necessarily to generate huge numbers of registrations. The “issue is converting first-time users into second-time and ongoing users,” he said. “If you don’t have an amazing first-use experience, you’re out of the game” – a huge change from the dynamics of selling software in a box.The Network EffectOne way to do that, Smith said, is to extend the network effect by enticing others to help develop the company’s products “while our engineers sleep.” Intuit has reached a point where “it’s not enough to do it ourselves,” when there are 60 million Intuit users and developers who could be “active contributors.”“End users no longer want to be consumers, we want to be participants,” Smith said. “Companies that win going forward have to have platforms that let users and partners contribute.”The Intuit Partner Platform isn’t new, but Smith is hoping to extend the concept. Also on Tuesday, Intuit formally announced that QuickBooks Online has expanded from four countries to more than 130 in 40 languages.According to Alex Lintner, president of Intuit’s Global Business Division, the company is counting on users – and eventually developers – to improve the translations and add local tax rates. Intuit is working on incentives to encourage that process, Lintner said. And last week, Intuit opened up the application programming interface (API) to its financial data service in the US and Canada.Cloud Computing Yields DataNow that Intuit has 45 million customers in the cloud, Smith said, “the next chapter in growth is data.” This is the “era of big data for the little guy,” Smith said, giving Intuit the chance to “capitalize on data that no one else has.”Hugh Molotsi, Intuit’s vice president of technology innovation, is working on an experimental Data Connection effort to analyze and derive value from data collected from Intuit customers. (Intuit says the data is “anonymized and aggregated.”) Molotsi demonstrated a program – not yet available to customers – that graphs connections among QuickBooks and Mint users to help them find customers and suppliers. For example, a home improvement company might be able to find out what areas have the most consumers who spend more than $500 per year on home products, leading to more efficient marketing efforts. It could also help create vendor ratings based on repeat business (“loyalty scores”) instead of anonymous reviews. Is It Working?Intuit’s transformation is working, in Smith’s view. In fiscal 2012 the company earned “$100 million in revenue from products that didn’t exist three years ago – way up from 2010.” It has 7 million customers on mobile devices, and is making $70 million in profitable revenue through those devices. “Almost every new customer we bring in is a connected services customer,” Smith said, meaning they’re using Intuit’s newer online services (not the packaged software) which deliver predictable, recurring revenues. There’s 50% more lifetime value in each QuickBooks Online customer, said Kiran Patel, executive vice president of Intuit’s Small Business Group. fredric paul IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Related Posts Massive

Here’s everything you need to know.Top image via B&H PhotoWhat Is Dynamic Range?Dynamic range is the “ratio between the largest and smallest values of a changeable quantity.” This range between the largest and smallest can be measured with light or sound. With sound, it’s the measurement between the “noise floor and the maximum sound pressure level” and what a microphone can capture. In terms of light, it revolves around the ratio between the brightest to the darkest.Image via Aversis 3DIn terms of photo and video, this is the range in which a camera can capture the brightest and darkest areas of an image without the loss of details in the image. If the camera moves beyond this dynamic range, then that’s when you’ll see the brights being washed out or the darks becoming noisy. So, the more dynamic range your camera has, the more leeway you have to capture your image. If you’d like to know more, check out this great video from Lynda.com. The clip comes from more of a photography angle, but the theory and principles of dynamic range are the same.Is It Really That Important?Camera manufacturers are constantly upgrading their technology with the goal of getting closer to the capability of the human eye. While they end up falling short, it’s not for a lack of trying. The human eye is an amazing optical receiver — and if it was a camera, it would be the most expensive camera ever.Image via Photography-101The dynamic range of the human eye is something that current camera technology just can’t match. However, dynamic range is vital to the filmmaking process in the digital age, especially as creators try to duplicate the look of film. Giving filmmakers wider dynamic range allows them to have so much more room to make adjustments and capture that desired look. Plus, with wider dynamic range, you won’t have to rely on artificial lighting to achieve the look you want.Which Cameras Have the Best Dynamic Range? Now that we have a solid understanding of dynamic range and how it works, let’s take a look at what options we have when it comes to camera technology. There’s a lot of confusion about what a cold call is and what a cold call is not. Whenever I write about cold calling I get emails and comments from people who insist the cold calling is dead. A few days ago I even had Jeffrey Gitomer comment to that effect on this post. But I don’t believe Mr. Gitomer means what some people think he means (but who knows, maybe he’ll correct me).I believe there’s some confusion around the words cold calling, and that confusion is a matter of semantics. We’re using the same words but we mean something different. When I talk about cold calling, I am talking about calling someone who is not expecting your call in order to initiate a sales conversation. What makes it cold is that they aren’t expecting your call.Different MeaningsIt’s important to understand that when people say they’re opposed to cold calling they are talking about picking up the phone and indiscriminately dialing through a list of numbers without doing any research—and without doing anything to improve your odds of success. This is not a good strategy. It never has been.In fact, in the days before computers (B.C.), if you were hired to sell, someone would throw a phone book on your desk, tell you that the book was your “leads,” and expect you to dial numbers. This is what some people mean when they say cold calling is dead. But even in the old days smart salespeople knew better than that. They read the business sections of the local papers, local business journals, attended networking events, and did everything possible to gain knowledge, insight, and introductions—anything that would allow them to make a warmer call. The reason there is so much confusion around the words cold calling is because a lot of people who tell you cold calling is dead mean that you should do everything possible to make a warmer call instead of indiscriminately dialing phone numbers. And they’re right—even though the person on the other end may still not be expecting your call. But another group of people, I called them the anti-cold calling charlatans, literally mean that you should never pick up the phone and call prospects. They go too far, and many of them offer awful advice. You can almost always spot the anti-cold calling charlatans because they always suggest that sales is a dirty word, that you should feel a sense of shame, and even change your title to disguise the fact that you’re selling. This is criminal negligence as advice given to sales people. Criminal! When I write that I am an advocate for cold calling, it doesn’t mean that I’m an advocate for indiscriminately dialing numbers without being smart enough to do any research. It doesn’t mean I’m an advocate for not trying to connect with your prospects on LinkedIn. It doesn’t mean that I believe that cold calling is better then asking for a referral and an introduction from a client that already loves you (even though in my experience people that don’t cold call don’t ask for referrals either). What it does mean is that you are the salesperson. After you’ve done everything you can to make a warmer call, you still need to pick up the phone and dial your dream client. You should also do whatever you can do to improve the likelihood that they say, “yes” in front of that call.

Sunday saw South Australia’s Touch Wine tournament run with 40 corporate teams from the South Australian Wine community and over 1000 spectators bracing the Adelaide heat, all with the aim of raising funds for South Australia’s homeless community. The hot weather did not reduce participants’ spirits with teams playing a morning full of Touch Football before indulging in the plentiful South Australian food and wine on offer, with plenty of entertainment and action to enjoy. For the more serious competitors, the Coopers at the Lane side were crowned Touch Wine champions for 2012. The event itself is one of the best on our calendar which engages the entire South Australian community from the Premier (South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill) to the park player and locals looking to enjoy a day in the park,” Maguire said. The day also featured the ever popular celebrity match with the Premier showing his Touch Football prowess along with three-time Olympian Rachel Sporn, Port Adelaide Power player Justin Westhoff, Dual Premiership Adelaide Crows player Kym Koster and Channel 7 Newsreader Mark Soderstrom. The day was again a roaring success for both the Touch Football community as well as the Hutt St Centre, who received crucial funds to support the employment of a recreation officer at the centre. “The team deliver an absolutely amazing event and one we are very proud of for various reasons. It engages the community, increases the profile of our sport and ultimately raises money for the homeless,” Maguire said.
