Jamaica’s Fernandez signs NBA deal – Former Calabar High star inks signature with Miami Heat

first_imgFormer Calabar High School star basketballer Vashil Fernandez has signed a contract to play for the Miami Heat in this season’s National Basketball Association (NBA) championship in the United States of America. The Heat announced the signing of Fernandez yesterday, but did not disclose the terms of the deal, citing club policy. The 24-year-old Fernandez is the all-time leading shot blocker at Valparaiso University, playing all four seasons with the Crusaders and appearing in 131 games. The 6’10” Fernandez last represented the Jamaica senior team at the Tournament of Americas in Venezuela in 2013. President of the Jamaica Basketball Association, Dr Mark Broomfield, said he is elated with Fernandez’s achievement and expects him to do well in the NBA. “I know where Fernandez is coming from because he has worked hard, and so he deserves to be where he is at now,” said Broomfield. “It’s also good to see a basketball player coming out of our high-school system and signing for a team in the NBA, because it augurs well for the development of basketball in Jamaica,” he said. “This goes to show that we have the talent here in Jamaica, but we just need the support to help our players to get to the next level,” Broomfield said. Fernandez averaged 4.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and two blocks while shooting 54 per cent from the field during his collegiate career. As a senior, he led the National Collegiate Athletic Association in blocks per game and was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Fernandez, who finished his career with 289 blocks, will wear the number 14 jersey for the Heat. Former Jamaica College star Jerome Jordan is the last local player to suit up for an NBA team. Jordan, who plays centre, represented the Brooklyn Nets in 2015.last_img

Now Available: Anti-Virus for Your Facebook News Feed

first_imgGuide to Performing Bulk Email Verification sarah perez Norton, however, falls far short of what Defensio provides today. Perhaps that’s because Norton’s app is a freebie for consumers while Defensio is aimed more towards companies and brands maintaining business-related Facebook pages. However, Defensio has a free option for consumers and it protects any Facebook page that isn’t used for commercial purposes.  Norton should not only offer the app for free, as it does now, but it should automate the scans. Facebook users can’t even stop long enough to concern themselves with their privacy settings, so asking them to run regular, manual scans of their News Feed is somewhat ridiculous.  Perhaps an automation functionality will arrive in a newer version. (We asked Norton on their Facebook Wall, let’s see if they respond.) In the meantime, it’s better than nothing. And if you come across a questionable link, it’s definitely worth the scan. You can install Norton Safe Web for Facebook here: apps.facebook.com/nortonsafeweb. Defensio can be installed here: defensio.com/signup. Earlier this week we asked if Facebook had grown to the point that it needed its own anti-malware service and – would you look at this! – now it has one. Well, sort of. The well-known security company Symantec has released an anti-malware service for Facebook which protects you from dangerous links posted to your News Feed. And it comes to you by way of a free Facebook application called “Norton Safe Web.” Keeping Your News Feed Malware-Free Apparently, this News Feed-scanning anti-virus application was released into beta back in mid-April, but we’re just now hearing of it thanks to the eagle-eyed bloggers over at All Facebook. Norton’s free software functions the same way any other Facebook application does. You click to give it access to your profile and then Norton Safe Web scans your News Feed for malicious URLs. It even scans inside shortened links from services like bit.ly or tinyURL. The results of the scan can then be shared with your friends from the application itself – a handy feature for warning others of any dangers on your Wall or theirs. Related Posts Some IssuesUnfortunately, when testing it ourselves we noticed a few issues. When using Google Chrome to perform the scan, we had to refresh the page manually to see the scan results. For some reason, the initial result was a blank page. For whatever reason, the app was unable to scan a couple URLs and simply marked them as “untested.” The app only checks for URLs posted within the past 24 hours. And finally – and this is perhaps the most important of all – the software does not run automatically. That means anytime you want to test the safety of the links in your News Feed, you have to launch the app and run a scan. Manually.A Better Option? DefensioWhile the first few issues are minor complaints (the Chrome bug may have been on our end, after all), this last item is critical and a huge miss on Symantec’s part. And it’s not an issue of Facebook not allowing an app to run automatically in the background, either. For example, earlier this year, we looked a Defensio 2.0, one of the first-ever security suites for Facebook. The application checks for malicious files, links and scripts as well as for profanity and other unwanted content that’s posted to your Facebook Wall. After you configure the level of protection you want, Defensio runs in the background, keeping an eye on your profile. When and if it finds some questionable content, it can automatically block it for you and send you an alert via email. I’ve personally been using it since January and it has sent me updates on more than a few occasions, warning me of potentially dangerous links or unwanted content. Not only does the app keep you safe from malware, it can help you keep your Facebook profile more “professional” as you can block URLs by category in order to keep links and posts about gambling, sex, drugs, racism and hate, or adult material from ever being posted in the first place. (If you have any friends who still think being tasteless is incredibly funny, you’ll appreciate this sort of help.)center_img Tags:#Facebook#security#web A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videoslast_img

A Practical Look at FilmConvert: Film Emulation for Video

first_imgAdd the feel and grain of motion picture film to your projects with Film Convert. What is FilmConvert?FIlmConvert is a Film Emulation plug-in and stand alone app. It is designed to emulate the color and grain of popular film stocks from Kodak and Fuji.Film responds to colors differently than video, and FilmConvert lets you pick specific film stocks to emulate. It feels more like a system than an add-on plugin, in that it reacts to what you choose as your “source camera”. This means that you get a specific response to your source footage.FilmConvert supports most digital camera formats (Arri, RED, Black Magic, DSLR’s, Go Pro) including the Blackmagic Pocket Camera Film setting. If  you are using DSLRs, there are several third parties that make Picture Styles so you can have more control over your image in Post and they work hand in hand with FilmConvert (VisionColor, Marvels and Technicolor for Canon, Flaat for Nikon).FilmConvert works in Premiere Pro, FCP, Motion, Resolve, After Effects, Photoshop and Sony Vegas. That it works in so many apps makes it very useful for freelancers like myself. The job I’m on generally determines what software I use, so it is nice to have the flexibility  to use FilmConvert in any of those for one price ($299). Additionally, it now works in DaVinci Resolve 10 Lite (which added OFX support that FilmConvert uses), which is very cool as it is a popular and free color grading app.Whether or not the $299 price tag is worth it for you definetly depends on the type of work that you’re doing. Obviously not all projects require or benefit from a film look, but for indie filmmakers looking to give digital video that organic effect, FilmCovert is a worthwhile option. You can download a trial version from their site, and Philip Bloom has a link for a discount as well as his thoughts on FilmConvert. For a taste of what FilmCovert can do check out this example by Brennan Robideaux:FilmConvert WorkflowLet’s talk a little about workflow. I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II and recently bought a Blackmagic Pocket Camera. A lot of folks shoot DSLRs with a flat picture style, to minimize “baking in” contrast” so they can better control that in post.I started using use VisionColor for Canon EOS  last year after being impressed by examples of the Picture Style on their website:It comes with 2 picture styles, VisionColor and VisionTech. To quote VisionColor:The VisionColor and VisionTech gamma curves are somewhat similar to Canon’s Neutral picture style with the Contrast at -4 (recommended value by Phillip Bloom, Stu Maschwitz, etc.)The VisionTech picture style (which comes for free with VisionColor) also lifts the black point to enable the camera to encode low light color information more accurately – not to increase DR”The appeal of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is the ability to shoot in CinemaDNG RAW (lossless compressed). This compressed DNG is different than the CinemaDNG the BMCC uses (that uncompressed DNG is supported in Premiere Pro and Speedgrade). Only DaVinci Resolve 10, After Effects, and Photoshop currently support it and I find it easier to work in Resolve and apply FilmConvert there. If you are interested in a Resolve workflow, check out Denver Riddle’s tutorial on transcoding in Resolve and relinking via XML.Using FilmConvert in Premiere ProSo, now let’s explore how FilmConvert and VisionColor work together…If you have noisy footage, FilmConvert suggests that you reduce noise first before applying the plugin. Scott Stacy has a video tutorial where he covers reducing noise, adds sharpening, and how he likes to use multiple instances of Film Convert. In Premiere Pro, I created an adjustment layer and applied FilmConvert.I find putting it on an adjustment layer gives you the most control. Depending on the look you are going for, you may want to apply multiple copies of the effect or LUTs on other adjustment layers.James Miller shares his FilmConvert and LUT workflow here, and I previously looked at LUT’s in PP here. The FilmConvert interface in Adobe Premiere Pro:In my example I selected VisionTech for the Canon 5DM2, since that is what I used. If you don’t have the preset you select, the FilmConvert webpage will launch and you can download the preset.Pick the Film Stock to want to emulate. If you want a sense of what the different stocks look like, check out Ruben Kremer’s comparison video. You can tweak the plugin with a variety of settings (Exposure/Temperature, Film Settings, Color Correction, Levels).I like to apply one pass of the filter with no grain. If I decide to add grain I prefer to create another adjustment layer and add the grain there so I have more control when a client changes their mind.I suggest you experiment and find out what works for the needs of your project. If you just want to emulate how film reproduces color, then just pick your source, pick the stock, and drop the grain to o%.Then you could add FilmConvert read more
