“It’s great to be back in the World Group. There’s a lot of time between now and February for us all to improve so that we can improve our chances of advancing further in the World Group in 2013.” 18 September 2012 Raonic then saw off debutant Nikala Scholtz 7-5, 6-4, 7-5 to leave Canada within one match of victory after the first day’s action. It was left up to Raonic, the world number 15, to secure victory for Canada. In a clash of the number ones, he emerged a convincing 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victor. ‘New era of Canadian tennis’“I am proud to be part of this new era of Canadian tennis,” he said after his win. It was always going to be an uphill battle for captain John-Laffnie de Jager and his charges with SA number one Kevin Anderson not available for the tie and number two Rik De Voest out through injury, while Canada featured Milos Raonic, their highest ranked player ever. “It was a great team effort this week starting with the way we practiced, the way we prepared for the tie, and the way we executed and played the matches.” SAinfo reporter Final singles matchIn the final singles match, Frank Dancevic capped the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Nikala Scholtz to make the final score 4-1 in the Canadians’ favour. Canada’s victory meant they qualified for the World Group in consecutive years for the first time since 1991-92. Only 16 nations are included in the Davis Cup World Group. Raonic was dominant from the first ball, getting an early break in all three sets to maintain control throughout the match. “To qualify for the World Group for two straight years shows that we can consistently perform at a high level,” said Team Canada captain Martin Laurendeau. On day one of the clash, Canada’s number two Vasek Pospisil put the hosts in the pound seats by defeating SA number one Izak van der Merwe 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the opening match. South African doubles winWith Daniel Nestor, a career Golden Slam winner in their doubles team, the Canadians were confident they could wrap up victory on day two in the doubles’ tie, but they were made to wait an extra day as Raven Klaasen and Izak van der Merwe outplayed Nestor and Pospisil 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. The Canadian Davis Cup team will remain in the Davis Cup World Group after beating South Africa 4-1 at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal over the weekend. It was the fourth defeat in four years for South Africa in promotion playoff ties. Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material

The sight of Prashant Jha, a ‘cute’ senior in Class XI of the same Patna school, would set her heart aflutter. His mobile was an object of envy, and when he asked her out, she would be happy to skip classes for long drives riding pillion.Protest in Patna organised by various women’s groups. Two years since she first saw him in 2010, their relationship blossomed. Priya was sure she and Prashant (all names changed) were made for each other. With marriage in mind, she paid no attention to the many rumours of Prashant’s affairs.Prashant had other ideas. In June 2012, when his parents decided to send him to Delhi for higher studies, he planned to dump her. But not before satisfying his friends’ requests, of ‘sharing’ his girlfriend with them. On June 14, he asked Priya to his friend Sushant’s home in Rambha Apartments in Rajvanshinagar, Patna. There, as the 17-year-old fought and pleaded, Prashant laughed away as he invited his friends Rahul Lamba and Rahul alias Ranvijay to strip her naked. They took turns to rape her and filmed the act on a cellphone. Priya says she knew the other rapists-both school seniors-whose sexual innuendos she had ignored in the past as they were Prashant’s buddies. The boys shot a 43-minute graphic video, which was uploaded from a cyber caf in late June. Arman, 15, Prashant’s junior, was the first to get the link. He promptly demanded sexual favours from Priya. A week later, Lamba summoned Priya to a cyber caf, showed her the clip, and promised to destroy it if she visited the apartment once again. He told her “Sushant bhaiya” would inform her parents and the police if she did not turn up. Inevitably, when she did visit the flat, Lamba and 26-year-old Sushant raped her again. Emboldened, they called her over once again a few days later. That is when she finally mustered the courage to refuse them.Click here to EnlargeTwo months on, Priya wakes up in dread in the middle of the night. Hers is a nightmare built on an even more horrifying reality; her family thinks she has brought them dishonour. A traumatised Priya has cut herself off from the world. She has deleted her Facebook account and switched off her cellphone. Her friends have been told not to meet the “disgraced girl”. “I can’t come out of it. I trusted him so much,” says Priya in a broken voice. The tables were turned when an FIR was finally registered on July 24 after the Bihar Women’s Commission (BWC) tracked Priya down and forwarded her statement to the DGP. “Her family was reticent about filing a case. She is still very vulnerable. We want the government and society to support her,” says Kahkashan Parveen, chairperson, BWC.The Patna police have arrested Arman, Prashant, Ranvijay, Lamba, Sushant and his 27-year-old domestic help Dinesh. Prashant and Arman are now lodged at a juvenile home, the rest in Beur Jail. The video is so horrific that it would probably shock even a nation with a sordid track record of 69 rapes a day. The National Crime Records Bureau says 25,125 rapes were recorded in 2011. Priya is the victim of a disturbing new trend of teen rapes. In 2011, teenagers committed 1,149 rapes and 1,231 teens were arrested in connection with them. Rape accounts for a majority of teen crimes. Worse still, of the hundreds of rapists who prey on teens, more than a third are themselves juveniles. With teens exposed to more conflicting information and explicit images of sex than ever before, from movies to the Internet, inappropriate sexual behaviour is probably only to be expected, what with no proper counselling, education or the like in place.”It’s never too soon. We can’t wait for teens to ask questions on sex to discuss the subject with them. The growing obsession among teens is surely a parenting issue,” says Dr Hetukar Jha, noted Patna-based sociologist. On a social network, Lamba cites “bed games” as his favourite sport, and describes himself as someone who likes drinking, partying and the company of girls. Prashant’s mother acknowledges her son’s criminal tendencies. In fact, she had wanted to send her son to Delhi in the hope that the relocation would mend his ways.”Sex offenders are very good at manipulating and deceiving others,” says a policeman. Already, all the rapists have offered to marry Priya, in the hope that this would secure them their freedom. Besides, Prashant, whose school leaving certificate mentions his date of birth as March 26, 1994, has managed to fool the police and secure a stay in a juvenile home instead of jail.”As

Share your voice Tags Kimberly White/Getty Images Democrats and Republicans in Congress are pushing to ban the Internal Revenue Service from creating a free system for filing taxes, according to a new report. Last week, members of the House Ways and Means Committee passed bipartisan legislation called the Taxpayer First Act, which prevents the IRS from creating an online tax filing system. For years, companies like Intuit, which makes TurboTax, and H&R Block have lobbied to keep the IRS from making its own free online system because it would threaten their profits, according to a ProPublica report published Tuesday. Taxpayers with incomes below $66,000 are eligible to file their taxes for free as part of a partnership between the IRS and Intuit, H&R Block and other companies. But only 3% of Americans do so every year, according to MarketWatch. The bill essentially maintains the status quo. Currently, the IRS has agreed to refrain from making its own filing system as long as a group of tax filing companies provide their free services to taxpayers making below the threshold income. Those companies are members of an industry group called the Free File Alliance. There have been several congressional efforts to make the deal between the IRS and the Free File Alliance law, according to ProPublica. The tax preparation industry has heavily lobbied in support of these efforts, with Intuit and H&R Block giving a total of $6.6 million in part to the IRS deal, according to the report. Rep. Richard Neal, a Democrat from Massachusetts and chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, reportedly received $16,000 in contributions from the two tax preparation companies during the last two elections.CNET was unable to verify those contributions.”We regularly engage with policymakers on matters that would benefit taxpayers, including the Taxpayer First Act, which would improve and modernize IRS service,” a representative for H&R Block said. “We are proud of our work to provide free tax filing services to millions of taxpayers through the Free File Alliance.”The IRS didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Intuit didn’t directly address a request for comment on the ProPublica article, but pointed CNET to information on taxes including a company post.First published April 9 at 3:37 p.m. PT.Update, April 10: Adds Intuit’s response. In order to keep the compact luxury SUV competitive, it’s getting a midcycle refresh for the 2020 model year with an updated look, a new powertrain option and, of course, loads more technology. The visual changes are subtle. Inside, there are new color themes and trims, as well as a redesigned center console that’s been reshaped to better hold cups, phones and other items. Externally, a bit of sheet-metal sharpening brings the XT5’s look more in line with its sibling, the new XT6. Last year’s premium LED headlamps are now standard equipment, flanking a new mesh grille treatment.Behind that grille, you’ll find the automaker’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine serving as the new base power plant for most trim levels. It’ll send 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in the direction of the front wheels via a standard nine-speed automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive being available as an option. Buyers will be able to upgrade to a 3.6-liter V6 engine for a bump up to 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. The V6 is standard equipment on a new Sport trim level that also features an adaptive damper suspension and a Sport All-Wheel Drive system with a torque-vectoring, twin-clutch rear differential that improves power delivery and stability while cornering.Expect significantly more tech in the 2020 XT5, starting in the dashboard, where you’ll find an 8-inch version of Cadillac and GM’s Infotainment 3.5 system with a new physical control “jog wheel” located within easy reach on the center console. The new software is a huge improvement over Caddy’s old CUE system, with an intuitive interface and pretty snappy performance. Still, I’m most happy to be able to ditch the old capacitive volume touch bar in favor of a trusty, accurate volume knob. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay continue as standard technologies, joined by new NFC smartphone pairing and high-speed USB-C charging ports scattered around the cabin. The visual changes are subtle, but the 2020 XT5 boasts more standard safety and cabin technologies than before. Cadillac There are also more standard safety features including forward collision alert with low-speed automatic braking, Intellibeam automatic high-beam lighting and pedestrian detection for front and rear. Meanwhile, the 2020 options list also gets fleshed out with newly available night vision, improved versions of the automaker’s rear camera mirror and surround-view camera systems and more. The updated 2020 Cadillac XT5 hits dealerships in “late summer 2019.” More standard equipment means that it will also come with a bump in price. We expect to learn exactly how much more closer to that launch window.
A woman walks past a logo of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) painted on a wall outside its office in Kolkata, India. A delay in payment of July salaries to BSNL staff has intensified speculation about the timing of the public sector telecom player’s privatization.REUTERS/Rupak De ChowdhuriThe failure to pay the staff of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) their salaries for July has triggered fresh speculation about the privatisation of the public sector telecom providers.Industry observers claim the government’s focus shifted to BSNL and MTNL after speeding up the privatisation procedures of national carrier Air India. The government has ordered Air India to freeze all appointments and promotions, setting the field for the privatization process. For the first time after Prime Minister Narendra Modi swept back to power, BSNL reportedly failed to pay its 1.76 lakh employees on time. The two public sector units (PSUs) had delayed salaries for February until mid-March due to a financial crisis. The BSNL had then said that it used its internal accruals to clear the pending salaries. The government, during its earlier stint, had held back sanction to the public sector telecom player for introducing 4G services, handing a major advantage to private-sector competitors. The government has also dithered on a decision to allow its participation in the imminent 5G trials. While BSNL chairman and managing director PK Purwar said that employees will get the July salary this week, an employees’ union leader said that no information had been shared by the management about early salary payment, according to PTI. “Salary for the month of July has not come. There is also no information when will it be credited,” the report quoted the All India Unions and Associations of BSNL (AUAB) convenor, P Abhimanyu, as saying. BSNL has continued to lose customers to private-sector competition as delayed government decisions have blocked the updating of its services.Facebook/ ReutersPurwar told the news agency that employees would get the salary in this week. “Funds are being arranged through internal accruals,” Purwar said. BSNL has 1.76 lakh employees across the country and MTNL about 22,000 employees. This is for the first time that the two public sector companies have defaulted on paying the staff on time after the new government took charge. The BSNL needs Rs 750 crore to Rs 850 crore for salaries while the MTNL needs around Rs 160 crore. The report said the MTNL Human Resource and Enterprise Business director Sunil Kumar said the company was in the process of collecting some dues after which the salary would be paid on a priority basis “very soon”.
