CDC issues warning for travel within the United States

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, TCI, August 4, 2016 – The UK tells its pregnant citizens not to travel to South Florida as the CDC for the first time in history issued a warning for travel within the United States.  And today Magnetic Media learned that the US has now added the Turks and Caicos Islands to its advisories regarding the Zika Virus. The US Embassy in Nassau over the phone confirmed to us that they are monitoring very closely these islands, and have in the meantime recommended that their US Citizens traveling to or residing in the TCI enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program or STEP.  This allows citizens to get US updates and makes it easier for the US consulate to contact them, as American citizens in the event of an emergency.Meanwhile, in Florida the CDC has named a 100 square mile area, north of Down Town Miami – Windward – as a Zika stricken zone due to 15 confirmed cases of local transmissions; which means mosquitoes are passing along the scary virus to residents there.Meanwhile, in Florida the CDC has named a 100 square mile area, north of Down Town Miami – Windward – as a Zika stricken zone due to 15 confirmed cases of local transmissions; which means mosquitoes are passing along the scary virus to residents there.  There has been concern by residents that the five cases in TCI were not more immediately reported; during House of Assembly debate last week, the Health Minister, Premier Rufus Ewing explained what factored into the delay in reporting.  But that explanation does not take away the local population or a tourists’ right to know. The Centers for Disease Control explains in the Mandatory Reporting of Infectious Diseases by Clinicians document that, “Reporting of cases of infectious diseases and related conditions has been and remains a vital step in controlling and preventing the spread of communicable disease. These reports are useful in many ways, including assurance of provision of appropriate medical therapy, detection of common-source outbreaks and planning and evaluating prevention and control programs.”There has been no update since the initial report of five confirmed cases in the TCI; we still have no idea what island, which part of the island or if there are more cases waiting to be confirmed.  In the US, quite a contrast, as the CDC has been so specific in reporting the infested area of Florida that it has narrowed it down to square miles, tells that there are 15 confirmed cases, and advises its citizens and guests to the country not to go to the Winward District. In order to keep the compact luxury SUV competitive, it’s getting a midcycle refresh for the 2020 model year with an updated look, a new powertrain option and, of course, loads more technology. The visual changes are subtle. Inside, there are new color themes and trims, as well as a redesigned center console that’s been reshaped to better hold cups, phones and other items. Externally, a bit of sheet-metal sharpening brings the XT5’s look more in line with its sibling, the new XT6. Last year’s premium LED headlamps are now standard equipment, flanking a new mesh grille treatment.Behind that grille, you’ll find the automaker’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine serving as the new base power plant for most trim levels. It’ll send 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in the direction of the front wheels via a standard nine-speed automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive being available as an option. Buyers will be able to upgrade to a 3.6-liter V6 engine for a bump up to 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. The V6 is standard equipment on a new Sport trim level that also features an adaptive damper suspension and a Sport All-Wheel Drive system with a torque-vectoring, twin-clutch rear differential that improves power delivery and stability while cornering.Expect significantly more tech in the 2020 XT5, starting in the dashboard, where you’ll find an 8-inch version of Cadillac and GM’s Infotainment 3.5 system with a new physical control “jog wheel” located within easy reach on the center console. The new software is a huge improvement over Caddy’s old CUE system, with an intuitive interface and pretty snappy performance. Still, I’m most happy to be able to ditch the old capacitive volume touch bar in favor of a trusty, accurate volume knob. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay continue as standard technologies, joined by new NFC smartphone pairing and high-speed USB-C charging ports scattered around the cabin.2020-cadillac-xt5-premiumluxury-013-low-resThe visual changes are subtle, but the 2020 XT5 boasts more standard safety and cabin technologies than before. Cadillac There are also more standard safety features including forward collision alert with low-speed automatic braking, Intellibeam automatic high-beam lighting and pedestrian detection for front and rear. Meanwhile, the 2020 options list also gets fleshed out with newly available night vision, improved versions of the automaker’s rear camera mirror and surround-view camera systems and more. The updated 2020 Cadillac XT5 hits dealerships in “late summer 2019.” More standard equipment means that it will also come with a bump in price. We expect to learn exactly how much more closer to that launch window.last_img

Emilia Clarke was cast in RDJs Iron Man 3 before script changes

first_imgIt was well speculated that the script of Iron Man 3 went through several changes before it was finalized for the production. Many have even stated that Maya Hansen was originally intended to play the main antagonist in the movie. The role was played in the movie by Ellen Brandt and if you remember Iron Man 3, you might recall that the part was too small that one could wonder why the actress was brought in for a script read if she was not the principal character.Meanwhile, Drew Pearce cleared the air by commenting on his own post by stating the following:”To those of you wondering: when you do early table reads, a lot of the new roles aren’t cast, will change etc. Friends of the production come in to help out, just so you can hear the words out loud, even if they’re not the person who’d play the role onscreen due to age etc. Emilia, only one season into GoT at the time, kindly sat in. And was great, btw.”Well, Emilia Clarke debut in the Marvel world did not happen for some reasons but fans were pleased to see her portraying the role of Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones for eight seasons. Emilia played the character gracefully and in the years to come, we are going to remember her last speech which she gave to her Dothraki clan. Game of Thrones season 8 episode 6 promoGame of Thrones (@gameofthrones/Instagram)In addition to this, Emilia Clarke was once considered to star as Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey movie. As earlier reported, the acclaimed actress denied the role because of the nudity. After Game of Thrones, Emilia has several interesting projects lined up. In 2019, she is going to star as Kate in the upcoming rom-com movie, Last Christmas. She is also set to share screen space with Jack Huston and Sophie Lowe in Phillip Noyce upcoming thriller movie, Above Suspicion. Emilia ClarkeHBO Asia Official TwitterGame of Thrones star Emilia Clarke was reportedly considered to star alongside Robert Downey Jr. in MCU’s Iron Man 3 movie. If this could have happened, then Emilia could have gotten her very own Marvel fandom.Earlier today, Iron Man 3 co-writer, Drew Pearce dropped some huge trivia about his time working with Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel movie. In his Instagram post, director Pearce posted a picture of himself a script read for the very first script of Iron Man 3. In the caption, he wrote “Downey, Cheadle, Emilia Clarke (long story, the script changed)…”It means that in the very early discussions of Marvel’s Iron Man 3, there was a character written for Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke. Since there is no more information about the part, we can only guess as what Emilia was supposed to play in Iron Man 3 movie.last_img

Rahim loses hearing after BCL beating

Photo: Prothom Alo video grabBangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists allegedly beat up a fourth year student of Shaheed Suhrawardy College in the city on Monday when he protested against extra money being collected for filling up forms of their bachelor’s examination.Bangladesh Chhatra League is the student wing of ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL).“They [BCL men] beat me up so badly that I cannot hear anything now. I went to a private hospital where the physicians told me I would need long-term treatment,” said the victim, Rahim Farayezi, 27.“I am not scared, by they beat me up badly. They also said they would hand me over to the police, saying that I was a member of Chhatra Shibir [student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami]. Then they released me and told me not to go back. But I have exams,” he said.Rahim told Prothom Alo that they [the candidates] deposited Tk 4,675 with the bank as exam fees. The respective departments were t provide them with forms free of coast, but they had to collect these from BCL leaders at Tk 500 each, and that too without a receipt, said the victim. He said he, along with several candidates, talked to the college principal Sheikh Abdul Kuddus about this, but the principal said he could do nothing.Rahim Farayezi and a few other students then went to speak to the BCL leaders around 11:00am on Monday and an argument ensued. At one stage, the BCL men beat him up.The principal said, “Only the departments are supposed to provide the students with the forms.”Responding to the allegations of BCL men beating the victim, he said, “No one has filed any complaints. I was at the college till afternoon.”College BCL president Sohel Rana denied the allegations, claiming that Farayezi probably had been beaten by outsiders and his organisation could not be held responsible for that.He would resign from his post if any such misdeed is proven, he said.last_img

Zimbabwe coup fears mount as military seen on streets

first_imgSoldiers stand beside military vehicles just outside Harare, Zimbabwe. Photo: ReutersArmoured vehicles were seen on the streets near the Zimbabwean capital Harare as questions mounted Wednesday over whether President Robert Mugabe, who has ruled since independence from Britain in 1980, still has a firm grip on power.Tensions between the 93-year-old leader and the military that has been a key buttress to his reign have intensified, and prolonged gunfire erupted near his private residence in the suburb of Borrowdale in the early hours of Wednesday, a witness told AFP.No further details were available.Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party accused army chief General Constantino Chiwenga on Tuesday of “treasonable conduct”. The public dispute has presented a major test for Mugabe, who is in increasingly frail health.Chiwenga had demanded that Mugabe stop purges of senior party figures, including vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was dismissed last week.ZANU-PF said Chiwenga’s stance was “clearly calculated to disturb national peace… and suggests treasonable conduct on his part as this was meant to incite insurrection”.Before being ousted, Mnangagwa had clashed repeatedly with Mugabe’s wife Grace, 52, who is seen as vying with Mnangagwa to be the next president. As the situation deteriorated overnight, the US embassy in Harare warned its citizens in the country to “shelter in place” due to “ongoing political uncertainty”.The armoured vehicles spotted outside Harare alarmed many residents as Chiwenga had warned of possible military intervention. The army’s spokesman was not available to comment.“I saw a long convoy of military vehicles,” a female fruit seller told AFP, while other witnesses took to social media to confirm the reports.Mugabe under pressureMugabe is the world’s oldest head of state, but his poor health has fuelled a bitter succession battle as potential replacements jockey for position. Some of the army top brass are seen as strongly opposed to Grace Mugabe’s apparent emergence as the likely next president.“We very rarely see tanks on the roads,” Derek Matyszak, an analyst at the Pretoria-based Institute for Security Studies, told AFP.“Chiwenga threw down the gauntlet to Mugabe… it would make sense for Chiwenga to organise some military manoeuvres to up the ante.“It’s clear we are entering new territory here.”In speeches this year, Mugabe has often slurred his words, mumbled and paused for long periods. His lengthy rule has been marked by brutal repression of dissent, mass emigration, vote-rigging and economic collapse since land reforms in 2000.The main opposition MDC party called for civilian rule to be protected.“No one wants to see a coup… If the army takes over that will be undesirable. It will bring democracy to a halt,” shadow defence minister Gift Chimanikire, told AFP.ZANU-PF’s influential youth league, which supports Grace Mugabe as the next president, said in a statement that army chief Chiwenga must not be allowed to choose Zimbabwe’s leaders.Speculation has been rife in Harare that Mugabe could seek to remove Chiwenga, who is seen as an ally of ousted Mnangagwa.‘Ominous moment’?The crisis marks an “ominous moment in the ongoing race to succeed” Mugabe, said political analyst Alex Magaisa in an online article.“(Mugabe) has previously warned the military to stay away from ZANU-PF’s succession race.“His authority over the military has never been tested in this way.”Mnangagwa, 75, was widely viewed as Mugabe’s most loyal lieutenant, having worked alongside him for decades. He fled the country and is thought to be in South Africa after issuing a searing five-page condemnation of Grace’s ambition and Mugabe’s leadership.Earlier this year the country was gripped by a bizarre spat between Grace and Mnangagwa that included an alleged ice-cream poisoning incident that laid bare the pair’s rivalry.Mnangagwa took over as vice president from Joice Mujuru who was axed in 2014 after Grace Mugabe launched a campaign accusing her of plotting to topple the president.Grace Mugabe — 41 years younger than her husband-has become increasingly active in public life in what many say is a process to help her eventually take the top job.last_img

Thai boys skinnier but in good health

first_imgRescue workers take out machines after 12 soccer players and their coach were rescued in Tham Luang cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand, on 10 July 2018. Photo: ReutersThe 12 boys and their soccer coach rescued from inside a flooded Thai cave lost an average of 2 kg (4 pounds) during their 17-day ordeal but were generally in good condition and showed no signs of stress, a senior health official said on Wednesday.Thais reacted with relief, gratitude and exhilaration after the last group of the “Wild Boars” soccer team was rescued from the Tham Luang cave, near the border with Myanmar, on Tuesday night, ending an ordeal that gripped Thailand and the world. They were taken by helicopter to a hospital about 70 km (45 miles) away to join their team mates in quarantine for the time being.”From our assessment, they are in good condition and not stressed. The children were well taken care of in the cave. Most of the boys lost an average of 2 kg,” Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong, an inspector for Thailand’s health department, told reporters.Parents of the first four boys freed on Sunday have been able to visit them but had to wear protective suits and stand 2 metres (7 feet) away as a precaution.Thongchai said one from the last group rescued on Tuesday had a lung infection and they were all given vaccinations for rabies and tetanus. The group ventured into the vast cave complex in northern Thailand after soccer practice on 23 June and were lost for nine days before they were discovered by British divers.Getting them out – which involved teaching boys as young as 11 who were not strong swimmers to dive through narrow, submerged passages – proved a monumental challenge. A former Thai Navy SEAL died during a mission in the cave on Friday.- Extraordinary -Their dramatic rescue dominated front page headlines in Thailand.”Hooyah! Mission accomplished,” read one headline, echoing the rallying cry of the Thai navy SEALs involved in the rescue. The hashtag #Hooyah was also hugely popular with Thai netizens wanting to show their support for the hundreds of rescuers, including divers from around the world, who helped to get the boys out.Thai prime minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha made a televised statement thanking everyone involved in the mission who “shared their expertise, manpower and equipments”.Official help came from Britain, the United States, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, China and Australia, a government document showed. There were also volunteers from Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Canada, Ukraine and Finland.A senior Australian police officer acknowledged the degree of international cooperation “in a very unfriendly environment”.”It is amazing what the human being can do. There are extraordinary people doing extraordinary things,” Glenn McEwan, the Australian Federal Police’s Asia manager, told reporters in Chiang Rai.” … We are humbled to have been a part of it. Returning the Wild Boar soccer team safely into the arms of their loved ones is the good news of the year,” he said.- Heroes -Audiences around the world cheered the team’s successful rescue after the saga generated messages of help, prayers and – finally – expressions of relief. The drama in Thailand has even resonated as far as Russia, where soccer’s World Cup is reaching its final stages. Players from France and England welcomed news of the rescue and sent their best wishes to the “Wild Boars” on Twitter.”This victory goes to the heroes of the day, well done boys, you are so strong,” French midfielder Paul Pogba tweeted after his team beat Belgium 1-0 on Tuesday to reach the final.Manchester City and England defender Kyle Walker, whose team faces Croatia in the second semi-final later on Wednesday, said he wanted to send shirts to the boys.”Amazing news that all of the Thai kids are out of the cave safely!” Walker tweeted.A Google search on Tuesday for the words “Thai cave rescue” revealed 359 million results.Araya Hargate, one of Thailand’s top actresses and a L’Oreal cosmetics brand ambassador, shared a cartoon of the boys surrounded by rescuers on her Instagram page, which has 7.9 million followers.”After all … the world is not such a bad place #humanityfaithrestored #thailandcaverescue,” the actress, known in Thailand as “Chompoo”, wrote.Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull praised the courage of the multinational rescue team, which was run by the Thai military, as “one of the most heroic and inspiring episodes of our time”.”It’s hard to imagine anything more frightening than being trapped underground in the dark, let alone having your children trapped underground in the dark,” Turnbull told the Queensland Press Club.last_img

Revitalized Market Square May Lure Houstonians Downtown

first_img X 00:00 /03:52 Listen – / 8Market Square Park, in the north end of downtown, is on the verge of becoming the city’s newest hotspot. It’s brimming with new bars, restaurants, residences and the park that itself has had a makeover. It didn’t happen overnight. It took a decade of investment and planning from the Downtown District and the Downtown Redevelopment Authority, two organizations tasked with imagining and implementing improvements. Angie Bertinot with the Downtown District laughs when she hears from people who think the area revitalized all on its own. “They’re like ‘You don’t need incentives, look at Market Square, that just happened,’” she said. “And I was just like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’”In 2010, the Downtown District renovated the park, which signaled that they were serious about waking up Market Square.“We really thought it could be an economic development tool because the area was really starting to kind of go through a stressful situation,” Bertinot said.Next they got advice from the Urban Land Institute. The report urged them to build housing, specifically housing that would be “affordable to a broad spectrum of those working in downtown.”The report said if you want a vibrant, 24/7 neighborhood, you need retail. If you want retail, you need residents. And the land downtown is really expensive, so if you want residents, you’ll need incentives to make it more affordable. So they kicked off the Downtown Living Initiative, a program offering tax rebates to developers. The 32-story Aris Market Square, developed by Hines, is almost complete. It’s one of two new luxury apartment buildings directly facing the square, both built with funding from the Downtown Living Initiative.“The tax incentive program really helped to bridge the gap of what the required asking land price was and what we were able to afford,” said David Haltom, a director at Hines.Haltom said the tower wouldn’t exist without the rebates. Some of their neighbors said that was money well spent. Dan Tidwell first opened his restaurant Treebeards in Market Square in 1978, and he said developers got a good deal.“When you have the Wortham Center and the ballpark and all of these things that are not going away, and you have someone offering you some money, it was really a winning combination.”He lives a short walk from the restaurant. So does David Haltom, working on the Aris Market Square building.“I get to walk to work every day,” he said. That’s pretty much what the Urban Land Institute recommended in 2012, that an incentive program build housing for people who work downtown. But did they have in mind two luxury buildings with one bedroom apartments starting around $2,700 a month?Bill Fulton is the director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University. He said the Downtown Living Initiative was simply about getting people to live downtown. Anybody.   “In Houston, what you’re trying to do is use a financial incentive to encourage people to build residential development at all, rather than something else,” Fulton said. That’s why he said you could consider the initiative a success.“On the other hand, in most cities, if the city provided you with a substantial financial incentive to build housing, they probably would require affordable housing in return,” he said.Critics say that the funding shouldn’t go to building luxury housing. The program has handed out money to 16 projects and the total amount may reach $69 million in tax incentives.   Ryan Leach is the executive director of the Downtown Redevelopment Authority. He said the Market Square Park area isn’t done. Workforce housing could come next.“Now that we’re kind of on a roll with that and we have some momentum with that, I think that there’s an opportunity there for us to focus on really creating workforce housing and affordable housing in a way that it really increases the downtown living population,” he said. 96 of developers believe developing soft skills is important

first_imgSoft skills have been high on the tech agenda for a while now. This was largely down to the stereotypical (and unfair) image of the IT team as quiet, uncommunicative and awkward. But it is also related to broader changes in tech. Today, more people have a stake in software related projects. Product and project managers, even financial managers, will have their work impacted by software. That means everyone’s communication around it is so important. This year’s Skill Up report clearly highlights that developers are aware of how valuable soft skills really are. A huge 96% of respondents said they believe that developing soft skills is important: The Skill Up 2018 report will be available to download on Monday 4 June. Perhaps this isn’t that surprising. We all know how much of a difference effective communication can make on a project. Without good communication, the technical bits of work become even harder. Why soft skills are important to developers working today If we go back to the stereotype of the ring-fenced IT team, it’s not hard to see why soft skills are so valued by business leaders and management figures. It’s almost as if trainers and consultants and management have conspired, saying ‘we need these engineers to be more like us’. But whatever the management industry want from tech pros, it’s clear that the real advantage of developing soft skills are for developers themselves. Here are just a few reasons why soft skills are so important for developers: It makes collaboration easier. You can’t of course, collaborate if you don’t communicate. And in today’s Agile-centric software world, clear communication is crucial. When you’re working to tight deadlines, being clear about your challenges and problems is vital. Soft skills can change how you focus on problems. Communication changes the way you understand problems. It changes the way they are framed. For example, is the database issue simply a technical issue, or is there a wider point about what the knock on effect for the user will be? There’s usually a number of technical solutions, but to select the best one, you often need a frank and clear discussion about the impact different decisions might make. Soft skills open up your career path. When you develop your soft skills you find that you occupy a subtly different role within your team or even within your organization. You become more visible to other people – maybe even more trusted. That can only be a good thing. At a superficial level it’s about status; but more importantly it allows you to push forward your own interests. How often have you found your opinions and ideas discounted or ignored? Yes, maybe your ideas were just really bad, but maybe you just didn’t quite communicate them properly. Similarly, soft skills are also essential for anyone networking. True, networking is rarely anyone’s favorite pastime, but doing it well could do wonders for your future. Also, meeting people is sometimes fun! Good people do exist! It makes work more enjoyable. Work isn’t going to be great every day. But anyone who’s worked in a job they hate will probably know that communication challenges are often at the root of their dissatisfaction. Of course, sometimes other people are the problem. But if you can keep up your end of the bargain, you’ve done all you can. And if you can start to help other people develop soft skills then you’re well on your way to becoming an important and valuable leader. You learn more when you communicate. This really comes back to collaboration, but it’s a little more specific than that. When technology changes so quickly and there are so many options out there – from what you learn to how you learn it – engaging with others can be so important. This might just be about the conversations you have with colleagues. But it’s also the wider conversations you take part in within a given community. Perhaps you contribute to a forum, or maybe just like tweeting – either way you’re not only playing an important role in the community, you’re also pushing your knowledge and understanding forward. The reasons why soft skills are important could be huge. And given 96% of developers believe it to be important, it would seem that no one really needs convincing. However, it is important to see how soft skills impact different parts of your job, and even your life. Yes it’s about writing great emails, but it isn’t just that. Yes it’s about learning how to network at conferences but it’s also much more than that. You can’t have great technical skill without soft skills The bottom line is that it’s hard to be a great technician without soft skills. It’s possible, but very rare. Nothing technical happens in a vacuum – technical things are always about people. Forget management speak and training courses: that, really, is the one thing you need to remember. Read next Soft skills every data scientist should teach their read more
