Delhis 16 bike ambulances helped 650 patients since February

first_imgNew Delhi: The 16 ‘bike ambulances’ running in the narrow lanes of east Delhi have helped over 650 patients since February, data provided by the Aam Aadmi Party government claims. The Delhi government also says that the bike ambulances act as the first responder vehicles for patients. “The bikes were launched in February with an aim to ensure timely health assistance in traffic-congested areas and small lanes in east Delhi. Currently, 16 bikes are running and have helped over 650 patients since February. On an average, we receive about 20 calls a day on 102 — the helpline number,” a health official told IANS. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murder Ranging from assistance in high or low sugar and blood pressure to fractures, the first responder vehicles have proved quite helpful in serving the area, the official said adding the bikes help in preventing the loss of limbs or life by providing basic first aid and stabilise the patient till the arrival of the ambulance. “We are planning to expand the same in the other parts of the city as we are getting a positive response in east Delhi,” the official said. Also Read – Two brothers held for snatchings The traffic, however, remains a challenge for the bikes as well, “but they reach on the spot earlier than the van ambulances”. “After receiving a call on 102, we sent both the bike and van. By the time the van reaches, the bike had provided the basic assistance. Also, there are areas in east Delhi where a van cannot go, so the bike helps the patients in coming to the main road or to the hospital depending on the situation.” All the 16 motorcycles have a portable oxygen cylinder, first aid kit and dressing materials, air-splints, GPS and communication device, foldable transfer sheet, Glucometer, pulse oximeter and portable manual suction machine among others. While rolling out the project, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Health Minister Satyendar Jain said the bikes will help in reducing the ambulance response time in congested areas and jhuggi clusters in east Delhi — East, North East and Shahdara districts. “Till now only big vehicles were available for ambulance services, now these bike ambulances will be able to reach narrow bylanes to provide immediate medical care for people residing there,” Kejriwal said. For calling the bikes, the patient has to call the helpline number — 102 and both bikes and vehicles are rushed to the spot from the Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS), an autonomous body of Delhi government providing round-the-clock free ambulance service in Delhi for accident and trauma victims, medical emergencies, transportation of pregnant women for delivery and post-delivery (drop back to home). The official said the CATS purchased 16 Hero Achiever motorcycles which are fabricated and equipped with medical equipment. “For the operational purpose, these bikes are also equipped with Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) for communication, GPS devices for tracking and route navigation and integrated with existing CATS Control Room. These bike ambulances are manned by trained ambulance manpower.” The project was completed at a cost of Rs 23 lakh.last_img

Edmonton airport travellers can read free short stories while waiting for flight

first_imgEDMONTON – Weary air travellers heading out from Edmonton can break up the wait with a free short story.Edmonton International Airport has a Short Story Dispenser in its main terminal.Airport spokeswoman Traci Bednard says travellers walk up to the black and blue dispenser, push a button and then a paper unfurls with a one, three or five-minute story.Bednard says the stories are from local Edmonton artists, as well as authors from countries or cities that are a non-stop flight away from the Alberta capital. The Short Story Dispenser is made by France-based Short Edition. She says travellers have told airport staff it’s a really good idea and the only other airport to have one is in Lyon, France.“If you’re travelling, whether you’re an Edmontonian, or whether you’re travelling from somewhere around the world, once you get past security and into the airport itself, you’re really starting a journey,” she said.“If we could use that time to entertain you and show you a little bit about what Edmonton has, show you a little bit about what our authors have and what they are writing about, what a great opportunity for the airport to do.”Short Edition says authors have a contract with the company so their work is protected and they get royalties every time their work is accessed in a dispenser.“Short Edition’s aim is to adapt literature to the modern world by combining short literature, the community and technology,” the company says on its website. “In this way, Short Edition uses passion and humour to inspire the community of readers and authors who dare to like short stories.”last_img

CDC issues warning for travel within the United States

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, TCI, August 4, 2016 – The UK tells its pregnant citizens not to travel to South Florida as the CDC for the first time in history issued a warning for travel within the United States.  And today Magnetic Media learned that the US has now added the Turks and Caicos Islands to its advisories regarding the Zika Virus. The US Embassy in Nassau over the phone confirmed to us that they are monitoring very closely these islands, and have in the meantime recommended that their US Citizens traveling to or residing in the TCI enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program or STEP.  This allows citizens to get US updates and makes it easier for the US consulate to contact them, as American citizens in the event of an emergency.Meanwhile, in Florida the CDC has named a 100 square mile area, north of Down Town Miami – Windward – as a Zika stricken zone due to 15 confirmed cases of local transmissions; which means mosquitoes are passing along the scary virus to residents there.Meanwhile, in Florida the CDC has named a 100 square mile area, north of Down Town Miami – Windward – as a Zika stricken zone due to 15 confirmed cases of local transmissions; which means mosquitoes are passing along the scary virus to residents there.  There has been concern by residents that the five cases in TCI were not more immediately reported; during House of Assembly debate last week, the Health Minister, Premier Rufus Ewing explained what factored into the delay in reporting.  But that explanation does not take away the local population or a tourists’ right to know. The Centers for Disease Control explains in the Mandatory Reporting of Infectious Diseases by Clinicians document that, “Reporting of cases of infectious diseases and related conditions has been and remains a vital step in controlling and preventing the spread of communicable disease. These reports are useful in many ways, including assurance of provision of appropriate medical therapy, detection of common-source outbreaks and planning and evaluating prevention and control programs.”There has been no update since the initial report of five confirmed cases in the TCI; we still have no idea what island, which part of the island or if there are more cases waiting to be confirmed.  In the US, quite a contrast, as the CDC has been so specific in reporting the infested area of Florida that it has narrowed it down to square miles, tells that there are 15 confirmed cases, and advises its citizens and guests to the country not to go to the Winward District. 2019 horror movies Are you ready to scream

first_img Tags Post a comment 2019 movies to geek out over More 2019 Movies: See what other films are coming up this year. 2019 Movie Trailers: See every movie trailer we have for 2019’s biggest films.  77 Photos Little Monsters is an Australian zombie movie starring Lupita Nyong’o. Sundance 2019 just kicked off, but a full closet of terrifying monsters already awaits.Instead of looking ahead to zombies, haunted houses and serial killers, we’ll get horror movies with refreshing, out-of-the-box twists. From the Mexican urban legend La Llorona to chilling children’s book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, many films in this year’s lineup have plots that escape the traditional horror movie frameworks (you know, a family moves to a new house and realizes it’s haunted). Horror movie fans like me are hungry for more novelty in our scary stories. And for that, my friends, I believe 2019 won’t disappoint. Are you ready to scream? UsusJordan Peele’s new film, Us. Writer and director Jordan Peele follows horror hit Get Out with the chilling Us, starring Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss and Lupita Nyong’o. Universal This is another horror feast written and directed by Jordan Peele, the mastermind behind Get Out. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Lupita Nyong’o and Elisabeth Moss, the film follows a family of four looking to enjoy summer with friends at their beach house. But their vacation turns into a nightmare when another family of four — that looks exactly like them — attacks them. The trailer had my heart pumping, and I’m excited to find out what the story is actually about. This film will show on opening night at the South by Southwest film festival (SXSW) on March 8, and then opens March 15 in the US and UK and March 28 in Australia.Little Monsters46000474772-c825094bde-oLittle Monsters is an Australian zombie movie starring Lupita Nyong’o. Sundance Lupita Nyong’o isn’t known as a horror film actress, but she’s going to appear in two scary movies this year. In this Australian zombie-comedy film, a musician, a kindergarten teacher and a kids’ show host have to protect the children from zombies. A lot of horror fans are very familiar with zombie movies, and I’m looking forward to seeing if this one can put a fresh twist on this classic horror genre. This film debuts at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The Prodigythe-prodigyA mother is concerned her young son maybe a prodigy of horror.  Rafy Who doesn’t love a movie with a creepy child? Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper Chapman on Orange is the New Black, stars in this chilling film about a mother raising a young son who starts to show signs of demonic possession. The film’s out on Feb. 8 in the US only. Light From LightThis film is going along with a classic horror setup — haunted house. Shelia is a single mom and a part-time paranormal investigator who’s asked to investigate a haunting at a widower’s farmhouse in East Tennessee. One thing is for sure — expect scary pop-ups. This movie hits later in January at the Sundance Film Festival. The Curse of La LloronalloronaThe Curse of La Llorona will come out on April 19, 2019.  Warner Bros. Based on the Mexican folklore of The Weeping Woman, this film is directed by Michael Chaves and co-produced by James Wan, who’s known for famous horror films like Saw, The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, along with Gary Dauberman and Emile Gladstone. If you haven’t heard of the urban legend of La Llorona, this is how it goes: The ghost of a mother who lost her children wanders along the river crying and looking for them. It’s said that La Llorona kidnaps lost children at night and drowns them, and if you hear her cry, you better run the other way. In this film, set in 1970s Los Angeles, a social worker with two young kids ignores the warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment. She and her children are stalked by La Llorona and desperately try to survive the nightmare. There haven’t been many movies based on La Llorona, so for people who grow up hearing her chilling tales, this film is a must-see. It will be in theaters on April 19 in the US and April 18 in Australia. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and VileextremelywickedZac Efron plays read more
